CoI: Risk in Bids PDF Print E-mail

Allan Mitchell from Thales is facilitating a UKAMP Community of Interest (CoI) on Risk in Bids and is looking for people to join it.

By definition, bidding is 'taking a risk'.  You are offering something for a cost, within a timescale, against a requirement which nearly always has some ambiguity. So, a lot of the focus during a bid is, justifiably, on reducing or managing that inevitable risk. Those of us who work in bids must therefore become very good at handling risk.

Traditionally the words "risk management" conjure up the image of risk management plans, risk registers, mitigation plans, fallback plans and sophisticated tools for capturing, managing and reporting risks. In addition, the impact of risk upon the schedule (timescale risk analysis) is also an important part of this field. But in reality short bid timescales and work pressure mean that a classic approach is usually unrealistic.

Like-minded people

Like it or not, those of us in the bid business need to be competent at resolving risk, and so it would seem appropriate to provide a mechanism for like-minded people to get together to discuss any issues or concerns they have.

For example, we could discuss the strategic use of risk in bids to project a stronger value proposition to the client, and thus strengthen our position in regard to our competitors. But no doubt members will be interested in other discussions around risk in bids. Maybe you’d like to develop your understanding of risk and opportunity management tools, techniques and practice. Perhaps you'd like to find out what a PIG is!  Whatever your starting point, we’re hoping that you will join the Risk in Bids CoI and participate in what will be an interesting and stimulating group that will span the practical and strategic use of risk and opportunity management in bids.

Next Steps

Clearly, by definition a CoI only exists if there is an interest within the ranks of the UKAPMP members. If you are interested in joining this CoI please e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
